FG Backs Mass Electric Cars Production to Curb Carbon Emission

The Federal Government has backed mass production of electric vehicles to curb carbon emission and to boost transportation system.

Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Omotenioye Majekodunmi, who spoke at the launch of the Climate-Smart Electric Vehicle Recharge Hub in Abuja, BYD Nigeria Motor Limited at the weekend, said the project aligned with Nigeria’s Just Transition Guidelines and the country’s newly updated NDC 3.0 targets.

Represented by Jummai Vandu, she  described the hub as tangible hope, stressing that Nigeria must transition at a pace consistent with its national realities, particularly its dependence on fossil-fuel revenue.

Majekodunmi pledged technical support to BYD to replicate the model across sub-nationals, adding that proper Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems would help quantify emissions reduced through EV adoption and unlock climate finance.

BYD Nigeria Motor Limited Vice Chairman, Moses Ayom, declared that the electric vehicle (EV) revolution would play a role in shaping Abuja’s emerging smart-city ecosystem.
