The Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority, Kelechi Ohiri, has listed the numerous benefits of health insurance, just as he confirmed that there was an ongoing review of capitation fees paid to healthcare providers under the national health insurance programme which highlights the determination of the Tinubu administration to improve the country’s overall health indices.
Speaking during a wide-ranging interview on NTA at the weekend, in which other leading lights of the sector also participated, Ohiri clarified other key issues around health insurance while highlighting areas of progress in the midst of challenges.
The other participants in the programme were Gafar Alawode, a Health Financing Expert; Ibrahim Wada, CEO of Nisa Medical Group; and Olumuyiwa Olusanya, CEO of Insignia Health Limited.
On capitation fees, a major complaint of hospital proprietors involved in the scheme, Ohiri asserted that it is a major issue that has been receiving priority attention because of its significance and the fact that the fees have not been reviewed for many years. He said, “One of the things that we observed is that it’s been a while since tariffs were actually reviewed in the sector, and one of the first things that we did in the NHIA upon resumption was to commission actuarial reviews, which started in February.”
