Nigeria’s Fertiliser Usage Recovers to Reach 1.64m Tonnes

Fertiliser statistics provider, AfricaFertiliser, has stated that the country’s official fertiliser consumption reached 1,642, 476 metric tonnes last year.

The country’s official fertiliser consumption dropped by 560,801 metric tonnes to reach 1,298,505 in 2022. In 2021, it was 1,859,306.

The Africa Fertiliser Watch, which covers more than 16 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, tracks regional and country’s specific impacts from the firm of global fertiliser prices, limited supplier inventory, and affordability at the farmer level.

Out of this figure, Ammonium Sulphate 312,355.00, Diammonium Phosphate 120423.00, Muriate of Potash 112182.00, Single Super Phosphate 14900.00, Urea 1082467.00, Enhancers 61.34.00and Organic Fertiliser, 88.57.

In 2011,total consumption stood at 481635.00 metric tonnes. In 2022, fertiliser consumption  dropped by 560,801 metric tonnes to reach 1,298,505 last year. Of this quantity, the consumption of ammonium sulphate was  188,740, Diammonium Phosphate 118,678, Muriate of Potash 34,996 and urea 959,980.

In 2021, consumption of ammonium sulphate was 182,845, Diammonium Phosphate 229,588, Muriate of Potash 142,846,while Urea was 303,423.

This year, The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority(NSIA), Joyce Onyegbula noted that the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) has not only addressed long-standing inefficiencies in Nigeria’s fertiliser sector but also led to the resuscitation and establishment of 84 blending plants across the six geo-political zones of the country.
