FG Seeks Alternative Funding for FERMA

Determined to address the persistent funding challenges facing the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, has directed the establishment of a steering committee to explore alternative financing options for the agency.

Speaking at a one-day retreat for FERMA’s board and management in Abuja, themed “Delivering FERMA’s Mandate Aligned to the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Goronyo underscored the critical role of sustainable road maintenance in national development.

He noted that no country effectively funds road infrastructure solely through annual budgetary allocations, stressing that the new committee will develop innovative strategies to secure additional resources and enhance FERMA’s capacity to keep federal roads in optimal condition.

“Well-maintained roads have profound implications on every aspect of our lives—healthcare, education, security, employment, economic growth, and overall national prosperity,” he stated.

The minister commended FERMA’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Emeka Agbasi, for his steadfast commitment to the agency’s mandate despite financial constraints, describing him as a “silent achiever” who continues to deliver remarkable results with limited resources.

He also praised the agency’s board members for their dedication, urging them to maintain strong collaboration with management to ensure the success of FERMA’s mission.
