Nigeria, Netherlands Renegotiate Double Taxation Agreement

The Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Kingdom of the Netherlands commenced the renegotiation of the Double Taxation Agreement between Nigeria and the Netherlands.

In a statement on Monday, it was revealed that the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, hosted the delegation from the Netherlands, led by the nation’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Bengt van Loosdrecht, at an event held at the Revenue House in Abuja.

The FIRS said the renegotiation marked the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s international tax relations.

This meeting followed the signing of the Tax Reform Bills into law by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025. The tax acts include the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, and the Joint Tax Board (Establishment) Act.

These Acts restructure how taxes are managed in Nigeria. With this move, the Netherlands, one of Nigeria’s long-standing trade and investment partners, is now the first foreign government to begin formal talks with Nigeria to renegotiate its existing tax agreement to bring it in line with the new reforms and remove outdated terms, especially those relating to double taxation.
