NSDC Pushes Greenfield Projects to Raise Sugar Output –CEO

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Sugar Development Council, Kamar Bakrin, tells select journalists how greenfield sugar projects are driving increased output, investment, and Nigeria’s quest for self-sufficiency.

Greenfield sugar projects are absolutely central to closing Nigeria’s domestic sugar production gap. The Memoranda of Understanding signed with the four promoters represent concrete commitments from credible investors with the technical and financial capacity to deliver.

Each project is designed as a fully integrated operation, combining large-scale sugarcane cultivation with modern processing facilities. At full operation, the four projects are projected to add about 400,000 metric tonnes of sugar annually.

Equally important is their geographic spread across the South-West, North-Central, and North-East. This allows Nigeria to leverage diverse agro-climatic advantages while ensuring that economic benefits—jobs, infrastructure, and enterprise growth—are widely shared.

These projects are community-anchored, sustainable, and structured to deliver long-term value. GNAL Sugar is progressing steadily, with Taraba State emerging as a highly viable location. We recently conducted a joint visit with the Lee Group, and the commitment of the Taraba State Government has been encouraging.
